How to Make Cut Flowers Last Longer
Share
Fresh flowers can brighten any room, but with a little vase care, you can help them stay beautiful for longer. Follow these simple tips from Swan Florist.
1. Start With a Clean Vase
Before arranging your flowers, wash the vase thoroughly with warm, soapy water. A clean vase helps reduce bacteria that can shorten the life of your blooms.
2. Trim the Stems
Cut about ½–1 inch from each stem at an angle before placing your flowers in water. Use a sharp, clean knife or pair of scissors, and trim the stems again every few days.
3. Use Fresh Water
Fill your vase with fresh, room-temperature water and change it every day or sooner if it becomes cloudy. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
4. Keep Flowers Cool
Place your arrangement somewhere cool and away from direct sunlight, heating vents, air conditioners, and drafts. Avoid putting fresh flowers next to ripening fruit, which releases ethylene gas that can cause blooms to age faster.
5. Add Flower Food
Use the flower food if available, according to the package directions. It provides nutrients while helping maintain the water conditions your flowers need.
6. Remove Fading Blooms
As individual flowers begin to wilt, remove them from the arrangement. This keeps your bouquet looking fresh and can help the remaining blooms last longer.
With just a few minutes of care every couple of days, you can enjoy your flowers for as long as possible. For beautiful, fresh arrangements and expert flower-care advice, Swan Florist is here to help.
